Nurse wants to be ‘sneaky’ when mom snaps photo letting everyone know she saw her

Sophie’s Story: A Mother’s Tribute to Nurses

Sophie was a happy, healthy 2-year-old until May 18, 2017, when she began having trouble breathing. Initially thought to be allergies or asthma, doctors soon discovered a softball-sized mass in her chest—Sophie had T-cell lymphoma.

Despite aggressive chemotherapy, Sophie’s condition worsened. She lost the ability to walk, talk, and eat, and needed a stem cell transplant. Her parents, Shelby and Jonathan, never left her side during the long hospital stays.

During this difficult time, Shelby noticed a nurse who quietly went above and beyond. She snapped a photo and posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, writing:

“I see you. You try to go unnoticed, but I see you comforting my daughter, easing her fears, saying ‘I’m sorry’ more times than others say ‘thank you.’ I see your bracelets for every child you’ve cared for. I see you comforting other parents, checking on us even when Sophie isn’t your patient. You are Jesus to us every single day.”

The post honored not just one nurse, but all who dedicate their lives to caring for sick children and their families. Sadly, Sophie relapsed and passed away on January 4, 2018. Shelby’s message reminds us to live fully, love deeply, and appreciate the incredible work of nurses who face heartbreak daily yet continue to give their all—with compassion, strength, and grace.
