Man Shot Dead After 4 Years on the Run with His 3 Children

Tom Phillips’s four-year flight from justice ended in a tragic and violent shootout deep in the remote New Zealand bush. When police finally caught up to him, the confrontation turned deadly, and Tom lost his life. Miraculously, his three children—Ember, Maverick, and Jayda, aged 6, 7, and 8—were found alive just two kilometers from the scene, unharmed despite the harrowing circumstances.

Authorities confirmed the children had been alone when discovered and immediately began providing them with specialized care. Police emphasized that the children’s welfare and privacy remain their highest priority as they start the long and difficult process of recovery from their ordeal. The bushland where the family was found has been locked down as forensic teams continue to comb the area for evidence.

Investigators are working to piece together how Tom was able to live off the grid for so long with his children, and whether others in the community may have aided him during his time on the run. The case took a critical turn after police received a tip in August 2025, which led to the discovery of surveillance footage showing Tom and one of his children burglarizing a local Piopio store in the early morning hours. The pair was seen stealing basic groceries, highlighting the harsh and desperate conditions the family faced while trying to survive in the wild.

Throughout the ordeal, Tom’s family made heartfelt public appeals for his return. His sister, Rozzi Phillips, appeared on national television sharing a letter from their mother, Julia, pleading with Tom to come home and expressing deep love and concern for both him and the children.

Rozzi also spoke directly to her brother, offering support and reminding him that his family was ready to help him through whatever challenges he faced. She praised Tom’s skills as a bushman and builder, believing he had done his best to keep the children safe and warm during their time in the wilderness.

Rozzi also sent a loving message to the children, expressing pride in them and a desire to see them again. While the children’s rescue brings relief, their trauma will take years to heal. Many questions remain unanswered: Who helped Tom hide and survive for so long? How did the children endure the extreme conditions of the isolated bushland? And what will justice look like for a case marked by such sorrow and loss?

Police continue their investigation, determined to uncover the full story behind this tragic saga. As New Zealand reflects on this emotional case, the nation hopes for healing and answers for the Phillips family after years of uncertainty and pain.
