Tragic death of Navy veteran with dementia found inside walk-in freezer at assisted living residence.

Kristen Spencer’s 83-year-old father, William Eugene “Gene” Ray, went missing from his room at The Waverly Assisted Living and Memory Care in Trinity, Florida. After checking the Ring camera she had installed in his room, Kristen noticed her father had left around 12:30 a.m. and had not returned. Hours later, Gene Ray was found dead inside a walk-in freezer at the facility. Gene Ray was a retired U.S. Navy veteran who served his country for 36 years. Due to dementia, he moved into the assisted living facility in May, hoping to receive professional care and a safe environment.

His family placed their trust in the facility to look after him. On September 26, Kristen Spencer noticed her father was missing when reviewing the camera footage. She immediately contacted the facility, but it wasn’t until several hours later that staff informed her that Gene had been found inside the freezer. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office arrived around 8 a.m. and found Ray unresponsive. He was transported for medical care but was later pronounced dead. Authorities believe the incident was accidental, and no foul play is suspected.

The investigation is ongoing to determine how Gene was able to enter the restricted freezer area. Kristen expressed her concern about how vulnerable residents are protected and questioned when staff would have found her father if the family had not alerted them. She noted that while there had been no major problems during his stay, some small warning signs had appeared in recent weeks.

The Waverly Assisted Living released a statement expressing their deep sadness and sympathy for the family. They stressed that the safety, dignity, and well-being of their residents are their highest priorities. The facility also rejected false claims circulating online and praised their staff for their professionalism and swift response to the incident.

Gene Ray’s family remembers him as a kind, hardworking man who never raised his voice. This tragic loss has deeply affected those who knew him. The family hopes the ongoing investigation will reveal what went wrong and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
