Looking back on the life of Barbara Eden

Barbara Eden, beloved for her role as the genie in I Dream of Jeannie, celebrated her 92nd birthday on August 23, 2023. Despite her success, including iconic TV and film roles alongside Elvis Presley and her role as Jeannie, Eden faced personal tragedy.

Her son, Matthew Ansara, struggled with addiction and passed away from a heroin overdose in 2001 at the age of 35.

Matthew, who battled drug abuse since he was 10, had periods of recovery but ultimately succumbed to his addiction. Eden, reflecting on her son’s struggles, shared that their divorce had a profound impact on him, contributing to his path toward drugs.

Despite years of effort to help him, including multiple rehab stints, Matthew’s life ended when he overdosed on unusually pure heroin. Eden mourned the loss of her only child, noting that despite his battles, he ultimately lost his personal war.

Barbara Eden continues to appear in TV shows and films, most recently My Adventures with Santa (2019). We wish her a very happy birthday and extend our condolences for her loss. If someone you know is struggling with addiction, please reach out to a support hotline.
