A tragedy on the farm: What happened to Mike Biadasz

On August 15, 2016, 29-year-old Mike Biadasz, a passionate young farmer from Amherst, Wisconsin, tragically lost his life while preparing the manure pit on his family farm. Unbeknownst to him, a rare weather phenomenon trapped toxic gases like methane or hydrogen sulfide, which overwhelmed Mike and 16 nearby cattle. The gases were trapped by warm air and morning fog, preventing their dispersion.

Mike’s friend and farm worker, Steve Burclaw, arrived to find him unresponsive, and despite efforts to help, Mike was already gone. His unexpected death shocked his family and community, leading to the creation of the Mike Biadasz Farm Safety and Education Memorial Fund. The fund aims to raise awareness about the dangers of manure gas exposure and provide safety education for farmers.

Mike’s passing serves as a reminder of the hidden dangers farmers face and the importance of safety in agricultural work. Through advocacy and education, his legacy continues to inspire safer practices in farming.
