Adric White, 18, decided to walk into a Family Dollar store to commit robbery. He was already out on bond for a different crime when he made that decision. Unfortunately for him, one of his would-be victims turned the tables on him and shot him. Here’s how Adric’s family responded.

Note: we are republishing this story which originally made the news in November 2013.

This story is about an attempted robbery at a Family Dollar by 18-year-old Adric White. He entered the store, drew a gun, and held the employees hostage while demanding money. However, a Good Samaritan with a concealed-carry license intervened. He pointed his gun at White and ordered him to stop, but White ignored the warning and turned to face the Samaritan, prompting him to fire five shots. The shots incapacitated White, allowing others to restrain him and take his weapon.

White’s family argued that the Samaritan should not have fired, suggesting he should have just left the situation alone. However, since White posed an immediate threat with his gun, the Good Samaritan’s actions were deemed reasonable in order to protect the store employees.

Though the five bullets hit White, he was in stable condition and expected to recover. The Samaritan, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed regret over the incident, acknowledging it was the first time he had to use his concealed weapon in such a way. Despite the family’s objections, it was seen as a justifiable act of self-defense, considering the danger posed by White’s actions.
