THE LITTLE BOY CLUNG TO MY K9 PARTNER—THEN HE TOLD ME SOMETHING THAT BROKE MY HEART

One day, while outside the station, I saw an 8- or 9-year-old boy, Eli, watching me nervously with my K9, Koda. When I asked if he wanted to say hi, he hesitated but approached. He hugged Koda tightly and cried, saying Koda reminded him of his dad’s dog, Max, who had been his only comfort before his dad left. Eli felt lost without Max.

I walked him home, and his mom thanked me, though embarrassed. Eli asked if Koda could visit again, and I promised. Over the weeks, Eli smiled more, and his mom joined a support group. They began to heal.

One day, Eli asked if his dad missed them, and I told him, “People make mistakes, but you deserve love.” Months later, I received a letter from his mom: Eli’s dad had reached out, and they were working on healing. Eli finally had hope. Small acts of kindness can make a huge difference.
