Lin Dunn Calls for Brittney Griner to Be Expelled from U.S. Olympic Team – “You Disrespect the American Anthem, You Don’t Deserve to Represent This Country”

In a recent development, Lin Dunn, the esteemed director of the Indiana Fever, has called for Brittney Griner’s expulsion from the U.S.  Olympic team. Dunn’s statement has ignited a significant debate within the  sports community, focusing on Griner’s past actions and the broader implications for athletes representing their nation on the global stage.

Dunn, a veteran in women’s basketball, has consistently championed sportsmanship and national pride. Her recent remarks are in response to Griner’s previous protests during the American national anthem, actions that Dunn and others perceive as disrespectful. She stated, “When you disrespect the American anthem, you don’t deserve to represent this country.”

Brittney Griner, a prominent figure in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and a key player for the U.S. national team, has been known for her athletic prowess and her outspoken stance on social issues. In 2020, amid nationwide protests against racial injustice, Griner advocated for the WNBA to cease playing the national anthem and chose to protest during its performance.

Griner’s protests were part of a broader movement where athletes used their platforms to highlight systemic injustices and advocate for social change. While many defended this form of protest as a legitimate exercise of free speech, it also faced criticism from those who believed such actions undermined the unity and honor associated with national representation.

In 2022, Griner was detained in Russia on drug charges, leading to a 10-month imprisonment. Upon her return to the United States, her perspective on the national anthem evolved. She expressed a renewed appreciation for the anthem, stating, “Just being able to hear my national anthem, see my flag, I definitely want to stand.”
