Elon Musk Backs Trump’s Call for New Ukrainian Leadership as Tensions With Zelenskyy Grow

Elon Musk has publicly aligned himself with President Donald Trump’s call for a change in Ukraine’s leadership, adding another prominent voice to the growing dispute between Washington and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Musk responded on X to a video shared by the White House’s Rapid Response account featuring Trump’s criticism of Zelenskyy. According to reports published October 11, Musk wrote: “Zelenskyy has gone too far.” His comment was widely interpreted as support for Trump’s demand that Ukraine choose a new leader. Trump Calls for a New Ukrainian President

Trump made his remarks on October 10, arguing that Zelenskyy had failed to reach a peace agreement with Russia despite what Trump described as multiple opportunities.

“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump told reporters, also criticizing Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. He argued that the attacks were contributing to pressure on global diesel supplies and hurting American farmers and ranchers through higher fuel costs. (Reuters)

The comments marked another public clash between Trump and Zelenskyy over how to end Russia’s full-scale invasion, now in its fourth year.

Controversial Diesel Agreement Adds to Tensions

The dispute intensified after Trump announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin involving Russian diesel supplies to global markets. The arrangement followed rising fuel prices and drew criticism from Ukrainian officials, who warned that easing restrictions on Russian energy exports could provide Moscow with additional revenue while the war continues.

Zelenskyy argued that relaxing pressure on Russia risked encouraging further attacks. Ukrainian officials have also continued to defend strikes on Russian energy infrastructure as part of the country’s effort to resist Moscow’s invasion.

Reuters reported that some U.S. lawmakers also questioned the diesel arrangement, arguing that sanctions should be strengthened rather than eased. Analysts cited by the news agency cautioned that the additional supplies might be too limited to produce a sustained reduction in fuel prices.

Zelenskyy Says Ukraine’s Leadership Is for Ukrainians to Choose

Zelenskyy has rejected the idea that decisions about Ukraine’s leadership should be dictated from abroad. He has also said that holding an election during wartime presents serious legal and practical obstacles because Ukraine remains under martial law.

According to the Associated Press, Zelenskyy said Ukraine could organize elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire, while emphasizing that the choice of president belongs to the Ukrainian people. Ukraine’s constitution bars national elections while martial law remains in force, and the war has displaced millions of citizens and left parts of the country under Russian occupation. Musk’s intervention adds to the public pressure on Zelenskyy as disagreements over peace negotiations, Russian energy exports and attacks on infrastructure continue to complicate relations between Kyiv and Washington.

For now, the exchange underscores a widening disagreement over the path toward ending the war: Trump has publicly blamed Zelenskyy for the lack of a settlement, while Ukraine maintains that any durable peace must address Russia’s ongoing military actions and protect Ukrainian sovereignty.
