A husband in Jiangsu, China never thought that a simple, warm hug would leave his wife with several broken bones. The woman broke five ribs and cracked a sixth after her husband hugged her to warm her up when she said she was feeling cold.

The unusual incident has raised awareness of osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and makes them easier to break.

According to media reports, the woman’s husband, surnamed Wang, later spoke about what happened and how badly his wife was hurt. Wang reportedly hugged his wife after she told him she was cold.

During the hug, he heard a cracking sound. His wife immediately bent down in pain and struggled to stand up again. At first, the couple did not seem to understand how serious her injuries were.

According to Chinese media outlet Jingshi Live, which Singapore-based media outlet Mothership referred to, Wang said his wife spent the night in pain before going to the hospital the next morning.

A chest CT scan showed that she had broken five ribs and suffered a small crack in a sixth.

The results came as a shock to the couple, who had no idea that such an ordinary moment between husband and wife could lead to serious injuries.
