Master Trooper Steven J. Perry Remembered for His Courage, Kindness and Years of Service

He wore the uniform with honor. Now, a community remembers the man behind the badge.

Master Trooper Steven J. Perry dedicated nearly seven years of his life to serving and protecting Durham County, North Carolina. His commitment to public safety and the people he served came to a tragic end on March 1, 2026, when he was killed in an on-duty traffic collision.

Perry was traveling on NC-147 in Durham County early Sunday morning when his patrol vehicle was struck head-on by a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The other driver also died in the crash.

His death left fellow troopers, friends, family members and the wider community mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant.

A Trooper Who Made a Difference

For those who knew him, Perry was remembered for more than the uniform he wore or the responsibilities that came with his badge.

Tributes described a man whose warmth, humor and caring nature helped others feel supported, even during difficult moments. His ability to connect with people and lift their spirits became an important part of the legacy he left behind.

His service reflected a commitment to protecting others and making a difference in the community he called home.

A Life Rooted in Durham

Perry was a Durham native and attended North Carolina Central University, where he played football for the Eagles from 2014 to 2017. He graduated in 2018 with a degree in criminal justice before pursuing a career in law enforcement.

He later joined the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and served Durham County throughout his nearly seven-year career.

Those who remembered his life reflected on the same qualities that shaped both his athletic and professional journeys: discipline, teamwork, dedication and a willingness to stand alongside others.

A Loss Felt Across the Community

Following the crash, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol expressed condolences to Perry’s family, friends and fellow troopers, asking the public to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein also honored Perry’s service. In recognition of his death in the line of duty, flags at state facilities were ordered to be lowered to half-staff on March 11, 2026.

His funeral and memorial service brought together members of the law enforcement community and others who wanted to honor his life and sacrifice.

Remembering the Man Behind the Badge

The loss of a law enforcement officer is felt far beyond the place where a crash occurs. It is felt by the family waiting at home, the colleagues who shared the job and the community that relied on the officer’s service.

For Master Trooper Steven J. Perry, the story is not only about the tragic circumstances of his death. It is also about the years he spent protecting others, the relationships he built and the kindness people remember.

His watch has ended, but his service and the impact he made will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Master Trooper Steven J. Perry. Thank you for your service. 🕊️💙
