Katie Piper gives ‘end of the road’ update after eye health battles

Katie Piper revealed on her Instagram earlier this year that she had made the decision to try a prosthetic eye shell following years of health struggles relating to her eye.

Katie was just 24 when, in March 2008, her despicable ex Daniel Lynch, now-47, plotted a vicious ambush, hiring someone to throw sulphuric acid in her face and leaving her with severe burns.

The couple had been dating for only two weeks. The night before the attack, Lynch had reportedly raped her in a London hotel room.

News of the shocking attack spread worldwide, while Katie was left needing 400 operations. Lynch was reportedly jailed for life.

Needless to say, the incident drastically altered Katie’s future. While her injuries were horrific, the former model bravely set about rebuilding her life, becoming a campaigner for other victims. She was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for charity and burns services.

At the close of 2023, Katie shared a health update with fans after she underwent surgery to help save her left eye.

The TV presenter uploaded an Instagram video where she said: “I’ve spent the morning back at the eye clinic as I’ve got problems with my eye.

“I’ve got a defect and an infection that is becoming really hard to treat.”

The now-41-year-old also revealed that it was “mentally hard” for her to have to undergo more surgeries relating to the wounds she sustained in the abhorrent attack almost 20 years ago.

Now, following years of health struggles, Katie has made the courageous decision to try a prosthetic eye. Sharing the news, she said: “After many years battling with my eye health, I’ve reached the end of road somewhat, and the decision has been made to try a prosthetic eye shell.

“This marks the start of a journey to have an artificial eye, with an incredible medical team behind me. As always I’m incredibly grateful to all those in the NHS and private health care system for their talent and kindness.”

“I will share my journey, I’m hopeful and nervous about being able tolerate it and would love to hear from any of you in the comments if you’ve been on this journey or have any advice…”

Katie attached an image and video from her procedure, including footage of the doctor inserting the prosthetic eye.
