Tragic Death of 29-Year-Old News Anchor Following Armed Robbery – What We Know

A violent robbery at a residential apartment complex in Abuja tragically took the life of 29-year-old news anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu, leaving the media community in shock. The Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, confirmed that Maduagwu, who worked for Arise TV, died after falling from the third floor of her Katampe residence during the incident on Monday, September 29. According to reports, vigilantes in the compound alerted neighbors after finding Maduagwu unconscious following her fall.

She was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors attempted CPR, but unfortunately, she did not survive. The robbery occurred early in the morning at Unique Apartments, a three-storey twin building with 18 flats. Police said the robbers, whose identities remain unknown, entered the compound during the early hours, and one of the two private security guards stationed there was shot while trying to stop them.

In the chaos, Maduagwu, who lived on the top floor, jumped from the building in an attempt to escape the attackers. Commissioner Adewale described the consequences as tragic and very unfortunate. A special investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been deployed to find the suspects, with authorities promising a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.

Maduagwu’s family is mourning deeply. Her father described the moment he learned about the tragedy as devastating. He recounted how he received an urgent call from a relative asking him to travel to Port Harcourt, which confused him as no details were provided. Later, his wife’s growing concern after attempts to contact Maduagwu failed led to arrangements to check on her at the apartment. Efforts were made to leave quickly, including requesting a helicopter from his company, but by the time the full picture emerged, it was too late.

Her father praised her as a passionate and committed young woman dedicated to her country’s future, whose dreams and ambitions were cut short too soon.

Following the news of her death, tributes have flooded in from colleagues, public figures, and institutions nationwide. Arise News described her as a beloved team member, a skilled journalist, reporter, producer, and trained lawyer who deeply connected with audiences and colleagues alike. Their official statement said, “Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will live on.”

Government officials also expressed grief. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, called her a promising lawyer and journalist who brought professionalism and brilliance to her role. He urged all security agencies to investigate thoroughly and bring the attackers to justice, extending condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.

Maduagwu’s last post on Instagram was on September 7. May her soul rest in peace.
