Mike Johnson Says Voters Would Be ‘Misled’ if Republicans Lose House

House Speaker Mike Johnson says a Republican defeat in the November 3 midterm elections would mean voters had been misled, pushing back against questions about whether he would take responsibility if the party loses control of the House.

Speaking with Fox News correspondent Aishah Hasnie, Johnson was asked about the possibility that Republicans could lose their House majority.

“If we lose the House, it will be because the people were misled,” Johnson said.

When asked whether he would bear responsibility for such a defeat, Johnson rejected the suggestion, pointing to his efforts to help Republicans retain control of the chamber.

The speaker said he had been campaigning nonstop to support Republican candidates, presenting his travel and campaign work as evidence that he was doing everything possible to protect the party’s majority.

Johnson Questions His Political Future

Johnson also acknowledged uncertainty about what would come next for him if Republicans lose control of the House.

His remarks leave open questions about whether he would seek to remain in leadership, pursue another political role or step away from Washington if Democrats take the chamber.

Losing the majority would significantly change Johnson’s position in Congress. The party controlling the House determines its leadership and committee structure, while the minority has fewer opportunities to advance legislation and shape the chamber’s agenda.

Johnson did not announce a specific plan for his future, instead expressing uncertainty about what he might do following a potential Republican defeat.

Midterm Elections Could Reshape Washington

The November 3 midterms will determine control of the House and influence the direction of congressional policymaking for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term.

Republicans are working to defend their majority, while Democrats are seeking to regain control of the chamber. The outcome will affect which party sets the legislative agenda and how closely the administration faces congressional oversight.

Johnson’s comments frame a possible Republican loss as a consequence of voters receiving misleading information, rather than a failure of his own leadership. However, he did not identify specific examples of voters being misled in the remarks provided.

For now, Johnson’s stated priority remains protecting the Republican majority, while his own political plans in the event of a defeat remain uncertain.
