Heatwave: 12 low-cost tips to keep your home cool

A cooler house starts with keeping sunlight out. Close shutters and curtains before direct sun reaches the glass, and ventilate when outdoor temperatures fall below those indoors. Outside, awnings, breathable shade sails, and carefully positioned climbing plants can shield exposed windows and walls. For lasting improvements, arrange an energy audit before investing in roof or wall insulation. Window films may also help, but check compatibility with your glazing and remember that performance varies by product.

Inside, reduce unnecessary heat by switching off unused electronics and replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs. Choose breathable bedding, and use a ceiling or portable fan where people are sitting or sleeping: fans cool skin, not rooms. Evaporative coolers work best in dry climates and can worsen humidity elsewhere. During dangerous heat, these measures may not be enough; seek an air-conditioned space if your home remains too hot, especially for older adults, babies, or anyone medically vulnerable.
