Country music legend Willie Nelson has endorsed Democrat James Talarico in the high-profile Texas U.S. Senate race, adding his voice to the campaign ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
In a video released Thursday, October 8, Nelson urged Texans to support Talarico, who is challenging Republican Ken Paxton for the Senate seat.
“He’s a good man and will be a good senator for the state of Texas,” Nelson said in the video, encouraging voters to cast their ballots for the Democratic candidate.
The endorsement comes after Talarico appeared alongside Nelson at the singer’s annual Fourth of July Picnic in Austin earlier this year. Nelson, a longtime Texas music icon, has a history of supporting Democratic candidates.
Rural Issues at the Center of New Initiative
Nelson’s endorsement also helps launch Rural Texans for Talarico, an initiative focused on policy issues affecting rural communities across Texas.
The effort is expected to address concerns including access to health care, recruiting and retaining medical professionals, internet connectivity and the impact of data centers on local communities.
Rural voters could be an important constituency in a statewide contest where both campaigns are seeking support beyond their traditional bases.

Talarico Faces Ken Paxton in High-Profile Contest
Talarico, a Democratic state representative, is running against Paxton, the Republican Texas attorney general and a close ally of President Donald Trump.
The race has drawn national attention because of its potential implications for control of the U.S. Senate. Democrats are seeking to gain seats in November, while Republicans are working to defend their majority.
Nelson’s endorsement adds to a growing list of public figures supporting Talarico. The Chicks have also expressed support for the Democrat, while musician Don Henley has contributed to Democratic candidates and political efforts in Texas.
Celebrity endorsements can attract attention and help campaigns reach new audiences, although their effect on voter decisions is difficult to measure.
Election Day Approaches
With Election Day set for November 3, both campaigns are working to broaden their coalitions and appeal to voters concerned about the economy, health care and the direction of the country.
Nelson’s message was direct: he believes Talarico would serve Texas well in the Senate and wants voters to support him.
Whether the endorsement influences the race remains to be seen, but it gives Talarico another high-profile supporter as the Texas Senate contest moves into its final weeks.
